THE Balearic Islands is the Spanish region with the highest rate of convicted minors, with 13.1 per 1,000 inhabitants between 14 and 17 years old.
There were 550 minors sentenced in 2014 according to the National Institute of Statistics. It is also the region with the highest level of criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants between 14 and 17, with 22.3 per 1,000.
For the whole of Spain, the number of convicted minors in 2014 rose by 2.1 per cent to 15,048. Almost 81 per cent of them were boys and 32.2 per cent were aged 17. More than 78 per cent of the convicted minors were Spanish nationals.
