THE outward leg of the yearly Operation Strait Crossing (OPE) concluded on August 15.
The operation commences each year in mid-June as North Africans living and working in Europe set sail from Alicante Port, returning to Morocco and Algeria for the summer.
The OPE continues until September 15, and now, with the first phase completed, the police, medics, Red Cross volunteers and the port authority are preparing for the return journey as the North African workers return to work.
This year 37,858 passengers passed through the port, 2,026 more than in 2014.
