Candidate for US president Cruz denies climate change exists

A MAJOR Republican presidential candidate in the US, Ted Cruz, has issued a complete denial of climate change, claiming that there is no evidence to say it is happening. 

With Obama due to announce his ‘Clean Power Plan’ on Monday (August 3), which the president has described as America’s “biggest, most important step” in tackling climate change, Cruz is reported to have told a lobby group meeting on Sunday night that “the data and facts don’t support” the existence of climate change.

The Texas senator has described global warming as a cover used by liberals in America to exert controls on the economy.

Obama’s Clean Power Plan aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions from American power stations by a third before 2030, with a significant shift to using renewable energy sources. The outgoing president clearly sees a shift to clean energy and action on climate change as a chief part of his legacy.

Each state will be assigned a carbon footprint target, and will be expected to submit detailed plans on how they will meet the greenhouse gas cuts. However, several states have already said they will ignore their targets.

Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton has said she will fight to implement the plan if elected:”It will need defending. Because Republican doubters and defeatists – including every Republican candidate for president – won’t offer any credible solution. The truth is, they don’t want one.”
