Peaceful holidays in Velez-Malaga

EIGHT children from the refugee camp in Tinduf (Argelia) will spend their holidays with families in Velez-Malaga this summer.
Under the name ‘Peaceful Holidays’, the project has been supported by the Town Council and is an initiative of the association Friends of the Sahara Inhabitants in Axarquia.
The agreement between the association and public institutions will see the latter fund part of the costs of children’s trips to Spain.
Nationally, a total of 5,000 children will benefit from this project in different autonomous communities of Spain, to prevent them from having to bear the extreme temperatures caused by the desert climate and also allow them to enjoy a series of fun activities and events during their stay in the country.
“Both the activity of the association and the families who open their doors to welcome these boys and girls is praiseworthy,” said Mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, who continued: “From the town council, we wish to provide our full support to this project so that it can be carried out during the next years.”
“This experience also serves to deepen relations between the Andalucian and Saharan folks, and also improve the health care, nutritional needs and quality of life of these children,” said coordinator of the association, Maria Victoria Naranjo.
Ms Naranjo said that there will be a fund raising event with live music on August 7 at the Antonio Checa school in Torre del Mar, with all proceeds going to the ‘Peaceful Holidays’ project.
