DEFENDING champion Novak Djokovic has won for the third time at Wimbledon, smashing Swiss player Roger Federer’s attempt to claim the title for the eighth time.
Four thrilling sets saw the 28-year-old Serb Djokovic beat his rival 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (10-12), 6-4, 6-3 in just under three hours to take his ninth Grand Slam.
“Roger makes you work hard for every single point,” the triumphant player said afterwards, stressing that playing against his rival was always a big challenge.
At 33, Federer was the oldest man to reach the final round at Wimbledon since Ken Rosewall did so aged 39 in 1074. Had he won, he would have been the oldest man to do so in the professional era, matching the feat Serena Williams achieved on Saturday.
