LOCALS and residents who visited the Ciutat Jardi beach in Palma on Saturday (July 4) to swim and bathe found the scene far from picture-postcard upon their arrival.A discharge of waste water, caused by the breakage of a pipe in the Torrent Gros stream, forced the security team in the area to call in swimmers from the water and hoist the red flag, banning bathing. The events took place at around noon and several hours later, the red flag remained hoisted.Workers from the municipal water treatment company EMAYA attended the area and took samples to determine the level of contamination. Around 24 hours later, they confirmed the presence of the E Coli bacteria, which indicates sewage was leaked into the sea.Local Police officers roped off the area surrounding the Torrent Gros stream and since Saturday, water from the desalination plant is been poured into the sea to speed up the natural cleaning cycle of the water.
