A GREAT-GRANDAD from Sunderland who was thought to be the oldest man in Europe has passed away. Nazar Singh, who celebrated his 111th birthday earlier this month, leaves behind 34 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren.
Mr Singh was born in the Punjab and had lived in England for 50 years, going to the North East in 1989 to move in with one of his nine children. Earlier this year he travelled to his native India, and after a battle with several illnesses, including pneumonia, he died there on Saturday night (June 20).
His family accredited the former labourer’s long and healthy life to 10 hours’ sleep every night, drinking milk and almond oil, and a regular nip of whisky.
