Islands’ gender violence rate highest in Spain

THE Balearic Islands are, according to the region’s Family Policies Institute (IPFB), the autonomous community with the highest rate of gender violence in Spain.
The data collected by the General Board of Judicial Power, indicates an average of 20.18 cases for every 10,000 women in the Islands, almost double the national average of 13,21.
However, within marriages, the rate of women mistreated by their partners has seen a reduction over the past few years, going from 35 per cent of the total official reports in 2006, to 29 per cent in 2010 and 25 per cent in 2010.
On the other hand, amongst ex-partners, the rate of gender violence has seen an increase, from 22 per cent of the total official reports issued for gender violence in 2006, to 29 per cent in 2010, and 33 per cent in 2014.
