FAMILIES in Almeria City’s La Chanca district whose running water has been cut off can have water again. Almeria City Council voted to waive water bills for families at risk of social exclusion so as long they do not use more than 15,000 litres of water a month.
They will only have to begin to pay for consumption over this amount.
This will alleviate the situation for many families although the headmistress of the Virgen de La Chanca school has asked for showers to be installed for children from homes without running water or electricity.
“There are children who wouldn’t have breakfast without the school dining room,” said Inmaculada Perez Yelamos.
“But we can’t tell these children that they must be clean if they have no water. We can’t tell them that they must learn and that they must work if their basic needs aren’t attended to.”
