A MADRID police officer was hit by a train and died after a man he and a colleague were attempting to question pushed him onto the tracks.
The two policemen were asking the man to produce his identification at Embajadores Station in Madrid City when he grabbed hold of one of them just as a train was passing and hurled himself, and the officer, at the train. The policeman died instantly and his attacker was seriously injured.
Trains on the C-5 Cercanias route between Laguna and Atocha stations were cancelled after the accident, which happened very close to Atocha Station where the same morning a man with psychiatric problems had caused chaos by threatening to blow himself up on a train.
