Torrevieja's salt headed for the USA

US BOUND: salt production is booming business

HALF of Torrevieja’s salt production was sent to America.

Last week, 30,600 tonnes of salt was produced with half bound for the USA on board the freighter Mandarin. Almost 200m in length, the ship anchored outside the port as it waited for the arrival a tug boat to collect the salt headed for the American port of Toledo in Ohio.

Another cargo ship collected 7,00 tonnes headed for Scotland.

The salt mines, a subsidiary of the French multinational Salins du Midi, said there was a possibility of a new shipment of 18,000 tonnes of salt, also bound for the East Coast of the United States in the next fortnight.

The salt from Torrevieja is mainly used for gritting roads and preventing layers of ice and snow forming. The production capacity at Torrevieja is one of the largest exploitations as, unlike other traditional sea salt, it can be extracted virtually all year round.
