Benidorm’s Hotel Sol Pelicanos

BENIDORM is to welcome a married couple in their 90s for their first every holiday outside of Britain.

Madge and Charlie Pallett, from Shepway, Kent, have been married for 71 years, but this is the first time that the pair will be experiencing an international holiday together: and they have chosen Spain’s holiday hotspot Benidorm for the honour.

The couple has chosen to stay in Benidorm’s Hotel Sol Pelicanos, made famous by the hit ITV comedy Benidorm.

The couple has been to the seaside on holiday before, but only in Britain. Ninety-three-year-old Charlie served in the Royal Army Service Corps during the war, but vowed never to return to Europe after his experiences there.

Charlie finally managed to put all that behind him, and the next stage was to convince his wife Madge, aged 91, to accompany him on holiday.

Madge had only been abroad once before, crossing the English Channel for a day trip to France.

Speaking to the Mirror, Charlie said: “Madge gets very anxious on public transport; you can’t even get her on a bus. I fell off my chair when she said yes.

“My swimming trunks are from the 1960s. They were fashionable then, but I don’t think I’ll take them. I was asked what the pocket was for. I said ‘that’s where I’m going to keep my false teeth’.”

Madge added: “I’m very nervous but I’m also very excited. It’s going into the unknown for me.”

The pair, who have five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, will be spending a week on the Costa Blanca with their daughters.
