Valencia’s best beaches

VALENCIA has many gorgeous beaches and now the locals, who know them best, have brought out a definitive ranking of the most popular and beautiful beaches in their province.

Spanish daily newspaper the 20 Minutos asked its readers, in the Valencia area, to rank their favourite beaches; here are the results.

Straight in at number one is Playas de Guardamar del Segura in Alicante. This is a series of eight beaches stretched out along 11 kilometres of fine sands interrupted only by the river mouth of the Segura. The most popular along this stretch are Centro for the younger beach goers and La Roqueta which is more family oriented – both have blue flags.

At number two is Playa de la Granadella de Javea, Alicante. This small beach is surrounded by a pine grove and extremely popular with snorkellers and divers.

Playa Norte de Gandia comes in at number three. This central, almost urban, beach has been a long-time favourite of the youth in the area due to its ‘happening’ atmosphere and the many activities on offer.

At number four there is Playa de Levante de Benidorm, Alicante. This urban beach is a favourite for youth and families alike – it is central to the town and has a lot to offer.

Playa del Portet de Moraira-Teulada, Alicante is at number five on the list. This cosmopolitan beach has easy access for the handicapped and is usually very busy.

At number six is Playa Norte de Peñiscola. This 5,000 metre-long beach is famous from films (El Cid) as well as being a local beauty spot.

Playas del Oliva comes in at number seven for its relaxing atmosphere and low occupation – it’s the local ‘chill out’ beach.

Finally, in at number eight, is Playa de Cala del Penyal de Calpe, Alicante. This isolated beach is perfect for snorkellers and divers as well as fishing and environmental excursions.
