Alize celebrates her win

In the shock of the tournament so far Serena Williams was knocked out of Wimbledon 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Alizé Cornet.

The number 25 seed had never beaten a top 20 player in a Grand Slam tournament in 13 attempts, but she finally took her chance. And what a scalp to take – five time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams.

Now the Frenchwoman will face Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the last 16,

Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal have both safely negotiated their way through to the next round at Wimbledon. The seven times champion and fourth seed, beat Santiago Giraldo to reach round four, and Nadal, the second seed, defeated Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in four sets. Nadal dropped the first set on a tie break before hitting form to take the next three sets 6-1.

But now Nadal and Federer will have to play back-to-back matches on Tuesday and Wednesday if they are to get through after a rescheduling decision because of rain.

That could be seen as a disadvantage especially as defending champion Andy Murray, and top seed, Novak Djokovic, will have a rest day on Tuesday should they win. They are both due to play on Monday with their next games scheduled for Wedneday.
