ITV soap bosses are reportedly developing a new plot in which schoolgirl Faye Windass, 12, becomes the youngest ever mother on the show.
The storyline is programmed to air for later this year.
Coronation Street has previously featured the pregnancy of 13-year-old character, Sarah-Louise Platt, played by Tina O’Brien in 2000.
In April this year, it was reported that a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl have become Britain’s youngest parents, after she gave birth to a 7lb 4oz baby girl.
A spokesperson for the Family Education Trust has warned scriptwriters in dealing with such topics, he said: “Scriptwriters and production companies need to take great care that in their desperation to attract high viewer ratingsthey do not normalise behaviour that is both illegal and damaging to impressionable children. It can distort people’s perception of reality and give the impression that such experiences are far more common than they really are.”
