Hashtag #worldcup will be breaking all trending records this summer, with Facebook and Twitter working on various strategies to be the main hub of conversations.
While the London Olympics was one of the most tweeted events back in 2012, this year’s tournament is expected to smash the 150 million tweet record set by the London Olympics.
It’s estimated that 3.2 billion people watched the last World Cup in 2010; therefore twitter is even starting right with its sign-up form, giving new accounts the ability to choose their team’s flag as profile image, Twitter users will soon be able to access one major timeline just by looking for #worldcup, and from there, find scoreboards for each game and even teams’ accounts.
A similar approach has been adopted by Facebook, putting together a simple interactive map showing where fans of some of this year’s World Cup top players come from, letting you break down where those people originate from by country and by city
