A new law has been passed which allows telephone companies to install mobile phone antennas on building’s rooftops without needing the permission of the community of neighbours or the town council.
All of the political parties were in favour of this law as, according to their spokespeople, it was necessary for the advancement of the communications infrastructure as well as the country’s economy.
There is mounting evidence that relates the antennae to increased cancer risks and, as such, this law which hands all the power to the phone companies has not been well received by consumer groups which are claiming that the government is using economic growth as an excuse to put citizen’s health at risk.
In order to install an antenna, all the phone companies now have to do is get in touch with the Ministry of Industry and tell them which roof they wish to use and then the ministry will give them permission without even consulting with the community.
