Less education means less safety

The level of cleanliness, noise and deterioration of the streets and buildings of an area contribute hugely to whether its residents consider it to be safe or not.

In Spain there are 117 areas in which more than 90% of the resident population consider vandalism and delinquency to be a major problem.

A study done by the Caixa Foundation has revealed the level of security felt by residents all over Spain.

Among the many other things which contribute to the residents’ feelings of security are their own personal level of education – apparently the less educational level achieved the more insecurity felt.

However, this could just be that the less educated are, generally speaking, poorer and more likely to live in less salubrious areas.

There also seems to be a tendency for those in the south of the country to feel less secure with the residents of Seville having a perception of delinquency of nearly 60% compared with 20% in Bilbao.

The study also revealed that areas with more immigrants are not necessarily seen as less safe than those with a lower percentage of immigrants.
