THE party led by Artur Mas, which defends the independence of Cataluña, wants to make all immigrants learn the Catalan language.
Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya (CDC), through its Nous Catalans Foundation, which aims to train and improve relationships with foreign immigrants, has drawn up a document regarding immigration policies which could come into effect if Cataluña becomes independent.
It points out that to obtain Catalan citizenship, immigrants must prove a certain level of knowledge of Catalan language, history and culture, and promise to respect gender equality, individual freedom, democracy, human rights and the fight against racism. They propose such matters should be taught in associations and public areas, as well as encouraging places of worship such as churches, mosques and synagogues to teach the language and culture.
The proposal will be debated in the National Council and aims to the “manage migratory flow” which the foundation says is needed in Cataluña because the birth rate amongst the native residents is low and more people are required to ensure its industrial and financial growth.
It goes on to say that a study of the legal situation of immigrants, in which they would have to prove legal residence and work, as well as being integrated within the society, should be carried out before Cataluña becomes independent.
