THE Almeria film industry came away from the Andalucian cinema awards (ASECAN) with five prizes. ‘Cannibal’ by El Ejido film director Manuel Martin Cuenca was the big winner this year with three awards for best film, director and screenplay. In addition, Juan Francisco Viruega from Roquetas de Mar received the award for best short fiction film for ‘Solstice’ and Almeriense Juan Gabriel García was recognised for his work on radio station Cadena SER for the Sunday programme ‘Se rueda en Andalucía.’
Apart from the five awards, another Almeria presence in Asecan was the film ‘Living is easy with eyes closed’, that David Trueba filmed in the province and proclaimed best film without Andalucian production. “Without the light of Almería, the film would not have been possible,” declared the actress, Natalia Molina, taking the award on behalf of David Trueba.
Other notable winners in this edition of the awards were ‘Ali’, ‘Who Killed Bambi?’ and ‘The extraordinary tale’, with two awards each, and ‘La herida’ by Fernando Franco, as best debut film.
