World No. 1 Serena Williams claimed her fifth US Open title this weekend when she beat Victoria Azarenka 75 67(6) 61 at Flushing Meadows.
“I definitely felt the love today, so thank you all for the support – it’s an honor playing in New York, and I give all the love and glory to Jehovah,” Williams told the fans. “Victoria’s such a great player and a great person too, and it was an honor to play against you. And thank you to everyone in the box too!”
Williams has now won 17 Grand Slam singles titles, moving her to within one of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and seven short of Margaret Court’s record total of 24.
