Businesses destroyed as worker sparks fire in Mallorca

A MAN working on a limousine and boat sparked a fire that destroyed seven buildings and the offices of the Blue Bay Hotel Group. And other commercial premises at the Poligono Son Castelló have been affected by smoke damage. 

The fire is thought to have started when a man who was preparing a limousine and a boat was working with an electric spot light that was next to a drum of flammable liquid.

Firemen rushed to the scene to try to stop the flames spreading, but by the time they had extinguished the blaze seven units were severely damaged.

Then just as they finished fighting the fire they had to go to another blaze at the Frimer bakers in Mercapalma at 9pm on Saturday.

This fire was also very intense and the building was completely destroyed by the fire. The company produces frozen dough for bread and rolls and its customers include the chain Eroski supermarkets. 

The fire service will remain at both sites for a few days dampening down.

A source of the fire service has indicated that approximately 60 per cent of the structure of the seven units and offices has collapsed and what remains will have to be demolished.
