UEFA Euro 2012

It will be a tough for Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

But, I admit I never expected Greece to win Euro 2004 or France to lift the World Cup in 1998… and going way back, Alf Ramsey’s team weren’t expected to win either in 1966, but they did!

Steven Gerrard and Ashley Young will have to ‘go for goal’ like they do at club level, because with Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard both out (injured) and Wayne Rooney banned from the first two group games (against the French and Swedes) their efforts will be crucial, so too will be those of Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe.

The defence looks solid enough with goalkeeper Joe Hart, one of the best in the world, behind a possible back-four of Glen Johnson, John Terry, Gary Cahill (or perhaps Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka, even Phil Jones) and Ashley Cole.

Scott Parker (if fit) will be the anchorman in midfield with Jordan Henderson his assistant, while Hodgson can also call on the services of the Arsenal duo of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott.

England has never reached the final of the European Championship.

This could just be the time to put things right. Fingers (and toes) crossed, hey!

It will be tough, mighty tough.
