Postman threw letters in skip

A POSTMAN who threw away 7,100 letters has accepted a year in prison and a €630 fine.

During the trial, which was held behind closed doors in Madrid Provincial Court, he admitted that in December 2006, just before Christmas, he threw the letters into some skips in Arganda del Rey, Madrid.

The public prosecutor was asking for two-and-a-half years in prison and a €4,500 fine, but the court reduced both because the man confessed and the case had taken so long to come to trial.

The 28-year-old’s lawyer claimed that he had “paid for what other had done” because there was a master key to the room where the letters were kept which anyone could access.

He also said that no-one complained that they hadn’t received their letters and that all the letters recovered by the Local Police were delivered.
