THE Junta de Andalucia has denied that the Denplax plastic recycling plant in Las Norias, El Ejido, has been closed because the facilities were flooded by the Balsa del Sapo waters rising.
The Environmental Department said in a statement that there is no relationship between the two matters and explained that the company has been in bankruptcy proceedings since early 2011, before the water rose and flooded it.
They added that the company would be liquidated as due to the current financial climate, dales have fallen.
The provincial delegate for the Environment, Sonia Rodriguez, complained that Partido Popular and other local parties had attempted to blame the water for the closure.
She also complained that El Ejido mayor Francisco Gongora had blamed the Junta for the facilities closing.
Last week, left-wing party Izquierda Unida announced the closure and one employee of Denplax said that it was due to the risk of the water reaching the electrical supply switches.
Meanwhile Rodriguez said the Junta had invested €7 million over the years in pumping systems to prevent flooding and plans to invest a further €9 million. However, this is a “palliative solution” she said, until the central government promises to build a drainage tunnel.
