FOOD BANK: 42 year old father of two, Jamie Young (left) getting pasta and milk from Turre food bank, with Alan Bishop and Margaret Freeman.

A FOOD BANK in Turre, is providing local people of different nationalities with basic staples on a weekly basis.

Four years ago, the members of the Turre Evangelical church, had just finished a bring-and-share lunch, when Florin, a local woman came to the door asking for food for her children.

The food was gone and the tables cleared. At that moment the church-goers decided that they must always have food on hand just in case.

The food bank was born. Since then, the project has become pro-active with volunteers going out into the community to deliver food to homeless people.

“We don’t just feed the homeless though,” said church deacon Margaret Freeman, “with the recession there are a lot of people that need food and we help anyone who asks.”

To donate food, especially staples like rice and oil, or cans of ready prepared food that doesn’t need heating, contact: Alan bishop 950 617 549 or Margaret Freeman 950 956 171
