NATIONAL POLICE have warned of an online fraud which is being carried out through a message in their name.
Via an e-mail which appears to have come from the National Police, computers are infected with so-called ‘ransomware’ which blocks the computer and demands payment of a €100 fine for accessing pages with content such as child pornography or file exchange sites.
It also claims that the computer has been blocked to prevent the user from committing further illegal actions.
In a press release, the National Police insisted that they never request payment of fines via the internet.
