120 Spanish workers laid off in Gibraltar

THE Spanish Workers in Gibraltar Sociocultural Association (Ascteg) said it is concerned over the dismissals of 120 people in Gibraltar since the beginning of the year.

The association fears that 120 to 150 more people will be dismissed within the coming weeks on the Rock, and 70 per cent of those losing their jobs are from La Linea de la Concepcion.

The spokesperson, Juan Jose Uceda, reported that last year, 900 people were laid off in Gibraltar, most of them in the construction sector. “The financial crisis has hit the neighbouring population later, but it is affecting us and we are worried” he said.

One of the main projects on the Rock was the access tunnel to the airport, but the company carrying it out, Brues y Fernandez, is in dispute with the Gibraltar government which it accuses of failing to pay 23 million pounds, while Gibraltar denies this.

Therefore, work is not going ahead.
