Edible African mango seed helps weight loss

THE African mango could be a weight-loss wonder fruit. Unlike other mangoes it produces an edible protein-rich seed that is commonly used in Cameroonian cooking.

Its ‘unique’ properties apparently help to budge gat and lower blood fat levels. Extracts from the seeds are available in a tablet form which have been dubbed the ‘breakthrough supplement’.

Oprah’s Doctor Oz gave the capsules his endorsement last year. Now two studies by Judith L Ngondi and colleagues at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon support the hype.

Their data, which was published in the Journal of Lipids in Health, showed that the seeds caused significant weight loss and improved blood fat levels.

“Like other soluble fibers, Irvingia gabonensis seed fibre can bind to bile acids in the gut and carry them out of the body, which results in the lowering of blood cholesterol as ewell as other blood lipids,” study authors wrote.
