fly problems in Almeria continue

THE plague of flies in several towns of the Levante Almeriense area continues to pose a threat to public health and some fear it could effect tourism to the area.

Marie Leake, Director of Lifestyle Enclosures in Antas said “People are finding it impossible to eat outside and are having outdoor screens and enclosures fitted more in areas where they would not previously have had to do so, as well as screens for doors and windows. We have been operating in the area for seven years and although there is always quite a problem with flies, this year is worse and we are very busy.”

Meanwhile Zoe Rylett, owner of Ferreteria El Real in Antas admitted they have had “extreme problems at home but we have found that a product which we sell is working well.”

Mark and Georgina Naylor, owners of the Five Bone Hotel in Turre: “We are not really being affected by it but we have heard many people complaining. However, we have changed the feeding regime and feed earlier, as well as removing uneaten food within ten minutes and cleaning all the time. Leaving food down is very dangerous and can lead to worms if flies lay their eggs in it”.

However Linda at Mojo’s, Mojacar Playa said: “We’re luckily not being affected by the problem.”

Local resident Jane Breay is heading the campaign to find a solution to the problem. She can be contacted via email paskyflier@gmail.com

Costa del Sol based naturalist Vejay K. Singh recommends a home-made deterrent which is less toxic than many products sold in shops: One part menthol mouthwash, three parts dilute washing up liquid, one part household ammonia. Spray this solution directly onto the insects during early morning when they are less active.
