More than 50 officers were deployed in an operation to trace the assailant.

Around 140 people were questioned, six people interviewed and 60 local properties visited. Within 12 hours the police had a suspect in custody. The arrested man was a 39-year-old who police had narrowed down as the prime suspect during their intense enquiries.

When a search warrant was granted by the courts in the afternoon the police entered the suspect’s apartment and discovered a knife which police believe may be the murder weapon, together with bloodstained clothes, both of which were removed for forensic analysis.

The arrested man has previous convictions according to sources, and he is currently being held without bail pending formal appearance before the court,
