Saved: PAWS Animal Rescue to remain open

PAWS-PATAS, the Mojacar-based animal rescue charity, will now definitely stay open. Due to close at the end of March through lack of funds, a tremendous surge of public support, has prompted a change of mind. Spectrum FM’s Richard Shanley, on whose radio programme the original closure announcement was made, had launched an immediate appeal to ‘Save PAWS’.

In four weeks this had raised more than €8,500 – enough to buy PAWS precious breathing space to re-organise on a sustainable basis.

“The crisis is not over yet,” said PAWS’ treasurer Janet Franklin, “but we can see a very big light at the end of the tunnel.   Now we have to justify that heart-warming public support and confidence by how well we take the society forward.”

PAWS is targeting Town Halls in an effort to secure continuing statutory funding, which it has never had.

“In a tourist area we perform a public service by keeping stray animals off the streets and beaches,” said PAWS spokesman Mike Dornan.

“The public recognise that, they have spoken loud and clear.  Now it is the politicians’ turn.   But we’d like their promises in writing – so we can hold them accountable after the elections!”
