Elche’s bid for 30 kph speed limit

ELCHE – THE speed limit has been set at 30 kilometres per hour in 17 streets in Elche. Those streets that usually have the most pedestrians were chosen in a bid to improve the quality of life of the neighbourhood, reduce traffic volume, the severity of accidents, noise pollution and carbon monoxide emissions.

This pioneering scheme has already been implemented in some of Elche’s streets and those in Barcelona. They have produced “excellent results” in both cases, according to Councillor Antonio Amoros.

“In 2009 there were 2,958 accidents, which were reduced to 2,680 last year, according to Amoros.

“It is difficult to control and order traffic in a city with a terrain like Elche.”

This measure follows an agreement between the General Directorate of Traffic and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).
