PARTIDO POPULAR (PP) and Ciudadanos party politicians agreed to move forward with budget measures for Almeria city in a meeting on Thursday.

The agreement was drawn up by the PP mayor Maria Vazquez and the Ciudadanos economy councillor Rafael Burgos after four months of negotiations to avert the “paralysation” of the city.

Sixty six measures were agreed by the two politicians, who both signed the document. They then shook hands in what was reportedly a symbolic gesture to show deadlock over the budget had ended.

Cllr Burgos said the agreement offered the stability the city needed for advancement and development.

“We are supporting the agreement for coherence and political responsibility to avoid the paralysation of the city,” he said.

“Our goal is to work for the residents of the city,” he added.

A charging network for electric cars, a renewal of the city’s municipal park and a creation of a police bicycle patrol were among the measures included in the budget.

Help with rent for under-35’s and the creation of artificial reefs of the city’s coast were also agreed on.

The budget has been finalised later than in previous years following months of deadlock between the two parties.
