HIGH temperatures have led to red alerts for fire across Costa Blanca.

Valencia’s government has announced maximum level alerts for forest fires until Thursday (June 29) as temperatures are set to hit up to 40 degrees.

This coupled with winds of up to 80km/h could spell disaster in the event of a blaze such as the one in Huelva.

Alicante’s lowest temperatures did not drop below 26 degrees and Orihuela did not go under 27 degrees making them the hottest lows of the year so far.

According to AEMET and the Climatology Laboratory at the University of Alicante, a pocket of hot air brought in by the winds will be the cause of the rise in temperatures. Coastal areas will reach highs of 34 degrees whereas further inland temperatures could reach 40.

As the region heads in to the summer following the driest spring in 150 years, authorities are calling on residents and visitors alike to pay extra attention to avoid causing fires.
