A VISITOR to Salobreña, Carlos López spotted an owl fall into the sea whilst sitting with family on the terrace of their rented apartment.

Whilst emergency services were alerted, he and his daughter Lorena went to the beach to see what was happening and he immediately realised that the bird was in danger of drowning.

After commandeering a pedal boat, he journeyed out to sea and then dived into water so that he could push the owl to the shore, which he managed to do without getting raked by the frantic bird’s claws.

Emerging from the water with the owl wrapped in a shirt, he was applauded by members of the public who thought that the owl would be drowned.

Carlos looked after the bird which was identified as an Eagle Owl (bubo bubo) until emergency services were able to take it to a sanctuary in Granada to recover.

Whilst wet through and slightly malnourished, the centre expects it make a full recovery so that it may be released back into the wild.
