NINE arrests of persons associated with a group listed as a terrorist organisation by several countries were made by Spain's National Police on January 27.

All arrested are believed to have connections to the Kurdistan Workers party (PKK), whose militant leanings have raised flags in the USA and Europe.

The left-wing militant organisation has Marxist-Leninist roots and has been embroiled in a bloody conflict with Turkey since the 1970s, fighting for autonomy for the country´s Kurdish population.

According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, the still-open operation performed dawn raids on 11 properties in Madrid, Valencia and Bilbao before making the arrests.

Eight of the accused were from Spain and one was Turkish. All are suspected of collaborating with PKK affiliates in other European countries, in order to provide an infrastructure for people to be sent to join the armed wing of the organisation, known as People´s Protection Units (YPG).

Since 2013, Spanish authorities have detained 19 people with PKK connections, including those arrested this week.
