FOUR US Marines and a gunman have been shot dead during an attack on Tennessee Naval facilities in Chattanooga. FBI Investigators are trying to establish whether the shooting, which occurred on Thursday July 16, was an Islamic State (IS) inspired terrorist attack but have yet to find any evidence to support this. President Obama has described the event as “heartbreaking.”
The gunman, who has been named as 24-year-old Mohammed Yousef Abdulazeez, apparently drove his car up to a naval recruitment centre shooting bullets at the building before driving to the Naval Reserve Centre 15 miles away where he shot the four Marines. During the incident three other people were also hurt, with a US Navy sailor sustaining serious injuries and a police officer shot in the ankle.
Police are describing the attack as a “domestic terrorist” incident and said that the gunman, a naturalised American, originally from Kuwait, fired about 30-50 shots during the event. Police arrested two women after searching his home in Hixson, nine miles away.
