TV magician Paul Daniels dies aged 77

NATIONAL treasure and television magician the inimitable Paul Daniels has died one month after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. He spent his final few days at home in Berkshire after returning from the hospital to be with his family.

The news was confirmed by his son Gary on Twitter who wrote “It is with incredible sadness that I can confirm that Dad, Paul Daniels, passed away over night.”

Daniels, who was a mainstay on British television following his big break in 1978, was said to be lucid and happy in his final days by his other son Martin, also a magician.

Martin said that his father had rejected radiotherapy treatment as it had very little chance of affecting the outcome and Daniels wished to enjoy his last moments to the best of his ability.

Known as much for his forthright views and sharp intellect, Daniels was, by his own and all accounts, accepting and comfortable with his fate. “Death isn’t scary – it’s just like going to sleep,” he once said. “It doesn’t bother me because when your time’s up, your time’s up. Some people can’t take that.”

Born in Middlesbrough in 1938 Daniels became enamoured with magic tricks at a young age and went on to entertain working men’s clubs with his skills throughout the 1950’s and 60’s before finally embarking on a full time television career.

At the height of his fame the Paul Daniels Magic Show attracted upwards of 15 million viewers, and was aired in dozens of countries worldwide, running from 1979 to 1994.
