The Pope is the king of Twitter

Pope Francis has defeated Barack Obama as the most influential tweeter. Although Obama has more followers, the Pope's followers retweet him much more.

According to a report conducted by Twiplomacy 2014, the Pope has an impressive 17,000 retweet average amongst his 14 million followers in nine languages.

Obama may have an impressive 43.7 million followers but he only has a tenth of the retweet rate at an average of 1,400.

Famous British tweeters have not fared as well. David Cameroon sits at 13th on the list and the Queen is only 36th.

"By this standard, Pope Francis @Pontifex is by far the most influential tweeter with more than 10,000 retweets for every tweet he sends on his Spanish account and 6,462 retweets on average on his English account," the report stated.

"Venezuela’s President @NicolasMadurois in second position, receiving on average 2,065 retweets per tweet on his Spanish account."

"The five most followed world leaders have one thing in common - they have discovered Twitter as a powerful one-way broadcasting tool," the Twiplomacy report confirmed. In addition, eight  world leaders hold the title of having a tweet retweeted over 24,000 times. This is truly the beginning of an age of ‘hashtag diplomacy."
