A THOMSON flight from Manchester to Girona was diverted to London Gatwick after an oven in the galley caught fire filling the cabin with smoke shortly after takeoff.

On 8 July flight  BY-2616  operated by a  Boeing 757-200 with 201 passengers and eight crew onboard diverted to London Gatwick where the aircraft made a safe landing.

Three cabin crew were treated for smoke inhalation at the airport before the aircraft was examined and declared safe to continue the flight after a crew change and a delay of six hours. 

A spokesperson for Thomson said: ‘We would like to apologise to customers travelling to Girona, Spain from Manchester as the flight was diverted to London Gatwick as a precautionary measure.

‘The flight was met by emergency services in line with standard procedures and to investigate the cause of smoke in the cabin.'
