MADRID musician Victor Lago has asked the Spanish parliament to support his proposal to add lyrics to Spain’s national anthem.

The composer has since launched a website to back his proposal and also started a campaign which aims to collect 500,000 signatures that will allow lawmakers to debate his initiative.

The Committee on Petitions to Parliament have passed Mr Lago’s proposal to Spain’s constitutional commission.

The Spanish Olympic Committee previously attempted the same motion, to add words to the national anthem, in 2008. However, this was rejected because lyrics were considered politically charged.

The musician said his lyrics are inspired by his love for Spain and Spaniards. “When I wrote the lyrics, I tried to stay as politically neutral as possible and attempted to imbue them with higher values that are above any movement or political orientation.”
