Motorcyclist on long road to recovery

TOLEDO HOSPITAL: David is visited by friends TOLEDO HOSPITAL: David is visited by friends

THIS weekend will mark a year since professional photographer and keen biker David Toms’ life changed forever.

Everyone who knows David knows of his lifelong love of motorbikes and his involvement with the local biking community. However he was not out on a ride when his accident happened but rather working: delivering a CD of photos for editing close to his home.

The freak accident, when his bike hit  a patch of sand, left him quadriplegic.

After six weeks in the intensive care unit in Málaga, he was transferred to a specialist spinal injury hospital in Toledo where his progress has been remarkable.

David is much stronger in spite of suffering various infections, depressions and low times.

He has regained some movement of his left leg and arm.

Friends, family, colleagues, clients, brides and fellow photographers were devastated by the news of his accident and rallied around to arrange fund-raising events for David’s ongoing care.

Now, one year on, David is excited to be planning his return to the Costa del Sol, preferably the San Pedro de Alcantara area, to continue his long-term care and rehabilitation.

His family and friends are searching for an apartment where he can live as independently as possible.

David will be back on the coast on the 31 August, and they're looking for a full-care residence for him for the month of September, (and possibly October) and a nice two-bedroom / two bathroom flat that will be his new home after that - once it’s kitted it out with everything he will need.

Ideally they’re looking for a ground-floor  flat as David loves to be surrounded by greenery.

They are also looking for a carer to live in the second bedroom -  and she/he will need to be a qualified nurse - someone just to be there at night, maybe give him a glass of water or a coffee, and to cover the few hours when he will not have the "official" nurses coming in for morning showers and who will get him into his wheelchair via a hoist for an hour or two outside.
