WHEN a passenger on a recent Edinburgh-Alicante flight was taken ill, the pilot asked if anyone on board could help.

Antonio Cayuela Costa, recently graduated from Murcia University, stepped forward.

“I’m a nurse,” he announced and was led to the passenger where another nurse was already beginning CPR.

As Antonio said afterwards, it was complicated working in such a small space but together they managed to stabilise the woman who was then moved to the front of the aircraft.

Her condition so improved that it was not necessary to take up the pilot’s offer of making an emergency landing at the nearest airport.

The plane touched down an hour later at Alicante to spontaneous applause for the two nurses and the crew as the patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance.
