EIGHTEEN cases of TB were confirmed at the Monteolivete reception centre for young people in Valencia City.

Three of those who tested positive are minors at the centre and 15 are staff members.

Union representatives maintained that the outbreak could have been avoided, criticising the way it was handled. When the first minor was diagnosed the Monteolivete staff were put at risk by accompanying him night and day in his hospital room, UGT officials said.

The unions also drew attention to a similar outbreak last August at the Camp Santa Faz centre in Alicante province when 35 staff members were infected.

UGT officials went on to say that the Monteolivete cases were further examples of the “grave consequences of improvisation, absence of procedures and lack of preventative measures at the centre.”

Before the TB outbreak, inspectors found that conditions and overcrowding there were so bad that the regional government ordered the minors’ immediate transfer to other centres in Valencia province.

This will now be held up, as the young residents must be kept in isolation until all risk of contagion has passed.
