GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Spain have arrested two Brits after they intercepted drugs hidden in packets of coffee at Alicante-Elche airport.

The parcels had been flown in from Hong Kong and two English residents of El Campello, 36 and 37-years-old, have been arrested.

The Guardia Civil has described the synthetic drug as 80 times more powerful than cannabis.

A total of 12,200 grams of the substance has been discovered with an estimated street value of  €3.5 million.

The operation began in mid-March, when Guardia Civil officers intercepted packages bound for a bar frequented by the English community of El Campello.

Spanish authorities put the pub under surveillance which resulted in the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect, who was collecting mail for the group that imported the drug, according to sources. The second suspect was arrested two days later at the Alicante-Elche Airport when he was trying to leave Spain.
