MORE than 20 children from Gregrorio Marañon Primary School in Cala del Moral (Rincon de la Victoria) have stopped going to class due to attacks and insults from one of their classmates.

Parents of the children, who are currently in the fourth year of primary school, aged around nine years old, have explained that their classmate is a girl with learning support requirements, and that the solutions presented by the Education Department of the regional government have so far not made any difference.

“Our first complaints arose in May of 2014 and for now the only solution given has been to hire a companion for the girl, who watches her 25 hours per week,” said spokesperson for the families affected, Stella Robles.

She added: “Her attacks have not ceased. The measures taken by the Education Department began this year due to our perseverance, but have not solved the problems. Our children are unhappy.”

The incidents started back in kindergarten, but in the last two years they have intensified, according to Ms Robles.

They have tried to contact the girl’s parents, but to no avail.

“We are carrying out this ‘strike’ with the firm conviction that we are protecting our children who suffer daily disruption of their school life,” said the spokesperson.

They added that the protest is in no way an attack against the girl or her family and that their only aim is to have the government guarantee the protection of their children.

The Education Department of the Junta de Andalucia regional government responded that the parents were informed of the measures taken on March 6.

“The orientation and special needs teams are involved, as well as a companion that stays with the girl during the five hours of class,” said the Junta in a statement. They continued: “These measures will be maintained until the end of the academic year and will be revised to decide whether or not a new intervention is needed.”
