The National Police have arrested a homeless man in Malaga after he set fire to another homeless man’s mattress as he slept.

The National Police arrested a homeless man in Malaga on February 1 after he set fire to another homeless man’s mattress as he slept in the exterior ATM of a bank.
The man has been arrested for his alleged participation in a crime of attempted murder and another of criminal damage.
The event took place on January 25 at around 3:30am on the entrance steps of a bank, located in the downtown area of the capital of Malaga. The victim, a 56-year-old homeless man, was sleeping on a foam mattress when the heat of the flames woke him.
The National Police reported that the fire affected a blanket under which the victim was covered, who suffered second-degree burns on one of his hands while trying to save his personal belongings from the flames.
A municipal cleaning worker informed the Local Police of the fire and a patrol came to the scene to help the victim, taking him to the hospital.
Investigators from the Central District Police Station carried out procedures that led them to identify the person, a 60-year-old man, presumed responsible for the attempted murder.
According to the investigations, the detainee set fire to the victim’s bed with a lighter and some papers. The fire quickly spread through the cardboard and blanket covering the injured man, who woke up when he noticed the heat of the flames.
In addition, the flames affected the facade of the bank where the victim was taking refuge, and the detainee was also investigated for criminal damage.
