Municipal Cemetery improvement

Work has begun on Motril Municipal Cemetery to reform and upgrade the first courtyard of the facility. The first courtyard is the oldest part of the cemetery having been built in the 19th century. It is in need of updating and is the first part of the facility that will be reformed, with the remaining sections to be upgraded in the years to come.
The complex was originally designed by the architect José Díaz de Losada and consists of enclosure that is a good example of the period. The site was first inaugurated in 1889 after some delays caused by financial issues.
The gardens and floors of the cemetery are well worn and in the eyes of Chamorro: “The respect we have for our ancestors means that we must dignify this site to the maximum.” She continued by justifying the expenditure saying: “As a resting place for our loved ones, we cannot ignore the historical relevance of the site.”
Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning and Agriculture, Antonio Escámez, added: “We want relatives who come here, to feel that our respect for those that have passed on is reflected in the total adaptation of the cemetery.”
