Aquaman: Disabled man swept away in the Tonga tsunami survives a 27-hour swim to the mainland.
On Saturday, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted causing a devastating tsunami. The tsunami has killed at least three people including one Brit charity worker.
A 57-year-old man from Tonga has been called a “real life Aquaman” after getting swept away and surviving a staggering 27-hour swim.
Waves from the tsunami ripped across the archipelago causing damage to many people’s homes. Communications were also knocked out in many areas.
Speaking to Broadcom Broadcasting, Lisala Folau revealed he was swept out to sea. Folau lives on Atata which is an isolated island. The tsunami waves hit the island at around 7pm on Saturday. The island only has a population of around 60 people and has been severely affected.
Folau had been hard at work painting his home when his brother alerted him to the tsunami. Quickly though waves hit and headed through his lounge. Folau is disabled and is not able to walk properly.
The real life Aquaman attempted to escape the waves by climbing onto a tree but he was soon swept away as another wave hit.
He commented: “I just floated, bashed around by the big waves that kept coming.”
Folau managed to cover the 4.7 miles to the main island of Tongatapu. He survived by keeping afloat and on Sunday night he finally reached safety.
The Tongan Aquaman has gone viral on Facebook. One Facebook user labelled him a “Real life Aquaman.” Another user simply said: “He’s a legend.”
